“Soft Landings” is an ongoing movement laboratory where we apply our learnings of the Axis Syllabus to dance. This week we will explore the elastic resilience and relationality of our connective tissues. This class includes exploration of anatomy, hands on partner work, solo movement improvisation, and taught phrase work where we can practice the themes we have developed.
The Axis Syllabus (or AS) is an educational framework and body of research on human movement, originally conceived of in the mid 90s by Frey Faust, a dancer, teacher, author and choreographer. The AS is continuously revised, tested, and contributed to by a growing network of international dancing researchers. I am a long-time student of this system and am pursuing certification as a teacher.

Our movement series engages with principles of functional movement and longevity-focused body practices through dance. We will explore topics including but not limited to:
-
landing pads
-
joint centration
-
hip and shoulder axis arcs
-
the primary pattern of walking
-
fascial lines and care
-
motoric masses
-
and more!

Designed for movers from diverse backgrounds, we will apply principles drawn from the AS to dancing patterns, generally starting low to the floor and then progressing to standing, traveling, dance-y phrases. The classes are appropriate for body-aware beginners, advanced level dancers who are curious about the AS principles, and all those in between.
